SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY George Stevens Academy is an independent comprehensive high school of 319 students, including 49 international and US boarding students, in grades nine through twelve. Founded as Blue Hill Academy in 1803, it was the first secondary school to open its doors east of the Penobscot River in Downeast Maine. Located in the center of Blue Hill village, a small coastal town on a scenic rural peninsula, the school serves as the local community high school with open admission to students from area towns. George Stevens Academy is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. The parent body is composed of a rich variety of small business owners, education and health care professionals, workers in the commercial fishing industry, contractors and boat builders, musicians, theater professionals, visual artists and craftspeople, and tourist industry workers.
ACCREDITATION & MEMBERSHIPS The Academy is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the State of Maine Department of Education & Cultural Services, and is a member of the National and Maine Associations of Independent Schools, the Independent Schools Association of Northern New England, and the Association of Boarding Schools.
MISSION STATEMENT George Stevens Academy is an independent high school on the coast of Maine. The Academy is a caring educational community committed to meeting the needs of each local and residential student with a challenging, comprehensive academic and experiential program that fosters the pursuit of knowledge, inspires creativity, develops self-reliance, and prepares graduates for a purposeful life in a changing world.
ENROLLMENT PROFILE For the 2016-2017 academic year, the Academy enrolled 319 students. The senior class numbers 93: 47 girls and 46 boys, including 12 residential students. The student/teacher ratio is 10:1. Most classes have between ten and twenty students.
FACULTY Twenty-eight full-time and seven part-time teachers; 18 men and 17 women; 19 hold advanced degrees.
CURRICULUM All core classes are college prep level unless noted as fundamental, honors, or AP. Honors and AP courses are offered for highly motivated college-bound students. Honors courses are available in all core academic subject areas in grades 9-12. In 2016-17 AP classes are offered in English Literature, US History, Human Geography, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Environmental Science, Physics, and Studio Art. In 2016, 78 students took 131 exams in 12 subjects.
NOTABLE PROGRAMS & ACHIEVEMENTS Juniors and seniors in good academic standing may elect to undertake an independent study or internship project for two weeks in February and March. Projects are supervised by a faculty advisor and an outside ‘expert’; one-half credit is awarded for successful completion of the Independent Study and Internship Project (ISIP). In the past 29 years, the GSA jazz band has won 18 state championships and placed in the top three ten times. In the same period, the varsity and junior varsity jazz combos have won 11 and six state championships, respectively. Boys varsity tennis has won 13 Eastern Maine championships in the last 14 years and girls varsity tennis has won five Eastern Maine championships since 2001. In 2015-16, both boys varsity cross-country and boys varsity basketball won the Maine state championship (Class C).
INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS & EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES Varsity sports include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. George Stevens Academy offers more than forty extracurricular activities and programs, including an all-school Arts Festival and an award-winning jazz program.
