Guided by Quaker principles since its founding in 1885, Friends School Haverford provides an intellectually rich program to an intentionally diverse school family. We promote academic scholarship, creativity, respect, integrity, and self-awareness with a commitment to creating a culture of stewardship and kindness. Friends School Haverford graduates are uniquely prepared to go forth with boldness of intellect and character.

Friends School Haverford was founded as a co-educational, Quaker, elementary school. The School remains under the care of* Haverford Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) and serves nursery school through grade eight.

Our program is rooted in academic challenge, intellectual vigor, artistic expression, service, and kindness. We encourage children’s curiosity, creativity, and joy of discovery as they grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

We foster an atmosphere in which students learn to work independently and in cooperation with others. They are challenged to question, explore, reflect, reason, and communicate effectively.

Friends School Haverford cultivates a community characterized by diversity in belief, ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic background. We emphasize the Quaker tenets of integrity, service, simplicity, equality, community, peaceful conflict resolution, stewardship, and sustainability.

Students are encouraged to listen inwardly and to learn to recognize That of God** in themselves and others. These shared values are reflected in the daily life of our School and in Meeting for Worship.

We teach our students to be contributing members of the community, to grow and to change with flexibility and courage, and to treat others with care and understanding.

Friends School Haverford graduates possess the intellectual and spiritual skills necessary to envision and create successful and meaningful lives.

We offer an intellectually powerful program that is beautifully designed and exquisitely implemented.

Friends School Haverford’s curriculum is a rich blend of language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, technology, health, and physical education. Art, music, science, computer, Spanish, and physical education are

each taught by a specialist in the field. In addition to classroom and coordinate teachers, the School’s Learning Resource Team plans enrichment and support for students. The LRT includes a learning specialist, psychologist,

and reading specialist. The technology coordinator and Extended Day Program Director also support the curriculum in various ways.

“Hands on, minds on” is at the heart of our program. An intellectually vigorous community, your child and his or her interests are profoundly known.

“Hands on, minds on” is the difference between a fifth grade teacher beginning a lesson on space exploration by saying, “Constellations are patterns of stars so distant from Earth that they serve as fixed points of reference for the purpose of navigation.” And saying, “In six weeks we will be launching our simulated spacecraft on its journey to Mars! Once we are out in space how will we know where we are?” The latter produces joyous, determined engagement in problem solving that leads to an investigation of how GPS works and how astronauts navigated when they flew to the moon. When navigators for the simulated mission to Mars point at the posters they made showing in white painted dots on black paper and tell you the names of the 12 constellations that encircle the Earth, they also tell you enthusiastically why fixed points of reference are a vital component of celestial navigation.

Your child’s school day is a series of moments like the one described – engaging, tailored to her or his age, important individually, naturally connected across, and a fundamental element of a framework for understanding the world that we convey to students.
