City University London has a rich history that dates back 160 years when the Inns of Court School of Law was established in 1852 – this would later become a part of the City Law School in 2001. St Bartholomew’s College of Nursing, founded in 1876 – would also later be incorporated into the School of Health Sciences at City, and the establishment of the Northampton Institute in 1891 would also eventually become City’s present-day campus.
The 1940s and 50s was an important period in the expansion of the University; during this time, the number of courses grew, student numbers increased and academic research was given more weightage. These efforts led to the establishment of City University London in 1966. In the 1960s, research assumed an increasingly important role, Consultant Lecturers were appointed and a growing number of Science Research Council grants and funding for Research Fellows and Senior Research Fellows were awarded. The University was created by Royal Charter in 1966.
In 1967 The Development Committee of the University drafted a 10-year vision which would see City evolve into a University dedicated to engineering, science, business, management studies and computing. This transitioned into a continued expansion over the next few decades when the first degrees in music were awarded; courses in journalism introduced; a center for legal studies established; followed by a new School of Engineering and School of Infomatics; the First law degrees awarded; and the School of Arts founded among many other notable achievements.
